Sustainability Policy

What a one-person Jersey software business does about its environmental impact, what it has committed to, and what it deliberately does not claim. The detail sits in our Environmental Action Plan; this is the public summary of it.

1. Scope and who we are

1.1

CitadelAero is the trading name of JLEC Limited, a Jersey company (no. 165488) whose registered office address is available on request. It is an AI platform and research company: we build Chuck, an AI workspace for aviation's safety and compliance teams; we research new ways AI can improve safety and risk management; and we offer aviation consultancy. We sell to businesses, and we continue to support our earlier safety management software for its existing users.

1.2

This policy covers the whole of that business. We work from a home office, from co-working space, and at client premises.

1.3

It is a public summary. The controlled document behind it is our Environmental Action Plan, which carries the targets, measures and dates in full and is available on request.

2. eco active membership

2.1

CitadelAero is a member business of the eco active business network, the Government of Jersey's environmental programme for Island businesses. Our membership began on 20 August 2026 and runs to 31 March 2028.

2.2

Membership is not a certification and we do not present it as one. It commits us to setting at least two new environmental actions each year — one of which must address carbon or energy — to reporting progress on them in an annual return each 31 March, and to keeping the network informed in between. What it certifies is that we have made those commitments, not that we have achieved any particular outcome.

3. Where our impact actually is

3.1

We looked at where a business like ours has an impact before choosing what to do about it. In rough order of significance:

Source	What it amounts to
Flights for consultancy	Potentially our largest single source. We have not yet delivered a consultancy engagement, so we do not know what it will be
Computing	Our software runs on hired servers in France and the United Kingdom, with an encrypted backup copy held in the Netherlands (Amsterdam), and our AI processing runs in Europe rather than the United States. Modest today, but it grows with the business — which is why it was worth acting on early
Island travel	Short journeys to clients and to co-working space
Workspace energy	A home office and a hired desk. Jersey's electricity is largely imported from France and is already low-carbon, so how much we use matters more than where it comes from
Waste	Low. No stock and no packaging — paper, and computers at the end of their life

3.2

Water use is at domestic scale and we have not invented an action for it.

4. What we have committed to

4.1

Our Environmental Action Plan runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 December 2027 and sets four actions, all due by the end of that period. In summary:

Action	Commitment	Status
1. Move our AI to EuropeCarbon and energy	Move the model processing behind our regulatory AI tool out of the United States and into Europe, where the electricity supplying the data centres is cleaner	Delivered — 19 August 2026, ahead of the 31 December 2027 date
2. Paperless, and recycle the old kitWaste	Stop using paper in normal working, printing only where a customer or a regulator asks. Retired computers go to Jersey's electrical waste recycling, data wiped first — never to general waste, and never replaced merely because a newer model exists	In progress
3. Find out what our travel actually isTransport	Keep a record of every business journey from 1 September 2026, and deliver work remotely wherever the job allows, so that a real reduction target can be set against real data in the next plan	In progress
4. Learn something, and give some timeTraining and community	Attend one eco active event or training session in person, complete one online course, and give time to a Jersey environmental group	Not started

4.2

None of these actions costs us money. The network's training is free to members and the rest is time. If an action did carry a cost we would say so, because a commitment nobody has budgeted for is not a commitment.

4.3

We kept the actions small deliberately. This is our first plan, and we would rather finish four straightforward things than half-finish something ambitious.

5. Everyday practice

5.1

Alongside the four actions, these are habits rather than targets — small, entirely within our control, and costing nothing:

(a)Laptops, not desktops. Roughly a tenth of the power for the same work.
(b)Switched off, not left on standby, at the end of the day and over the weekend.
(c)Heat the room we are working in, not the whole house.
(d)LED lighting, and daylight in preference to lights.
(e)Walk or cycle to town when the weather and the diary allow.
(f)Two questions before we buy anything: do we need it, and how long will it last.

5.2

We deliver most advisory work remotely, and we do not charge for travel the work does not need. Reducing travel is therefore how the service is sold, rather than something extra to remember.

6. What we do not claim

6.1

We think a small business is more useful to its customers when it is straight about the limits of what it has done. So, plainly:

(a)We are not carbon neutral or net zero, and we do not describe ourselves as either.
(b)We have not measured our carbon footprint. The figures behind this policy are estimates. Home office electricity in particular shares a meter with a house, so we estimate it from working hours and equipment ratings — and we say that is what we have done.
(c)We do not offset. We would rather make real reductions first and measure them. We will look at offsetting again at the December 2027 review.
(d)We have set no travel target yet, because we have no travel data to set one against. Guessing at a percentage would be worse than admitting that.

7. Responsibility, review and reporting

7.1

The Director owns this policy and the Environmental Action Plan behind it, delivers the actions, keeps the records and reports at each review. In a one-person business there is nobody else to pass it to, and pretending otherwise would be a governance fiction.

Date	What happens
1 September 2026	Plan period starts. Travel record begins
31 March 2027	Annual return to the eco active business network. Progress reported on all four actions; membership renewed
31 December 2027	Full review of all four actions, including anything unfinished. Two new actions set for 2028, one of them on carbon. The plan moves to a January–December cycle
31 March 2028	Annual return reporting the completed plan period

7.2

This policy is reissued whenever the plan is reviewed, and whenever an action is finished, changed or added. Where a statement here has stopped being true, we would rather correct it than leave it standing.

8. Where our next actions will come from

8.1

(a)A travel target, once the record kept under Action 3 tells us what our travel actually is.
(b)A measured carbon figure for the business, replacing the estimates in this policy.
(c)Making the software itself more efficient. Wasted computing is wasted electricity, and it multiplies with every customer we add.
(d)More regular involvement with an Island conservation project.
